An Old Car for Grandpa

When I was early in my fifth grade year several weeks of our weekly art classes were dedicated to string art. You would mount a patten made up of labeled dots to a fabric-covered piece of wood, drive a small nail through each of the dots, then go by a pattern to wind thread or string around the nails to create the picture. Removing the paper from beneath the strung artwork afterwards required tweezers and a steady hand.

I loved the art form and made several more as gifts for family. This one was a gift for Grandpa Schaeffer for Christmas, 1988 (I was almost 11 years old). That was the first winter that my grandparents lived in town, and this piece of art work hung on Grandma and Grandpa's bedroom wall until it was returned to me last week.

The wood is 10" by 13", the art itself about 6" by 10".
