I thought it was high time I gave you all a sneak peek at an ongoing project of mine - plushie gaming dice! Originally I wasn't going to post anything until I had the full set done, but I'm just too proud of these to keep hiding them. They're so frakking cute! (I don't think I can technically call them amigurumi because they don't have faces; maybe someone who's more up on Japanese culture can clear that up for me.)
These little guys are five times the size of standard RPG dice (boy, wouldn't it have been clever if I'd remembered to put those dice in the picture for scale?! Next time...). So the d4 is 10 cm per side, the d6 is 7.5 cm per side, and the d8 is 8.5 cm per side. They're made from a standard worsted weight yarn, but using a size F (3.75 mm) hook, which is way smaller than what I usually use for that weight of yarn. That makes for a nice tight weave so the stuffing doesn't come through. The numbers are embroidered on each side, then the pieces are sewn together and it's stuffed with fiberfill and tada! Plushie dice!
These aren't hard to make but they are time consuming. The d8 took me forever because I didn't have a couple of the pieces lined up perfectly when I started sewing and I had to pick the whole thing back apart. They are so much fun though! I just love them.
Yet to come are the percentile dice (two d10s), the under-loved and seldom-used d12, and the granddaddy of them all, the d20.
I am such a geek.
As always I'm using a Boye aluminum hook, size F. The main yarn is Patons Canadiana acrylic worsted weight in Black Forest (a super dark green) and the embroidery is Love Knit ww acrylic in white. Pattern is my own.
O_O I shall make an offering to the Gaming gods for you... or money.. when I has money.. I will kill for a D20
